| Why Fitch Attorneys? | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Why do you wish to undertake your pupillage with Fitch Attorneys? | I wish to undertake my pupilage at Fitch Attorneys because of its expertise in international corporate law cross-border transactions. The firm’s regional and global practise aligns with my career goals, and the opportunity will aid in developing the required skills for my career in corporate law. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| What attracts you to corporate and commercial legal practice? | My interest in corporate and commercial legal practise stems from its position at the intersection of law, strategy and global business. It challenges my analytical thinking, commercial awareness and innovative problem solving to help clients. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Are you able to fully commit to a six (6) month to one (1) year pupillage? | Yes | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Professional Attributes | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Describe an achievement that best demonstrates your resilience, initiative or leadership. | During my MSC research, I explored the relationship between AI and the law. A supervisory feedback on my narrow scope redirected my focus on business impacts globally to analyse how different jurisdictions were responding to technology regulation. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| What do you believe distinguishes an exceptional lawyer from a competent lawyer? | The difference between a competent lawyer and an exceptional lawyer lies in the way they apply their knowledge of law. A competent lawyer knows the law, analyses legal issues and provides persuasive arguments whereas an exceptional lawyer in addition to these, would act to also curb future issues. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Describe a time you received constructive criticism. How did you respond? | During an internship opportunity, I rushed a draft of witness summaries and as a result missed minor timeline inconsistencies with exhibits. Accepting a partner’s feedback, I corrected my errors immediately and adopted a drafting checklist. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Commercial Awareness | Businesses increasingly expect lawyers to provide commercially practical solutions not merely legal opinions. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Tell us about a recent legal, business or economic development that you believe every corporate lawyer should understand. | Every corporate lawyer should understand the growing significance of Environmental, Social, Governance(ESG) considerations in transactions. ESG is no longer simply a compliance issue, but is increasingly influencing due diligence, risk allocation, valuation and deal structures. As regulations develop globally, companies are required to assess issues relating to environmental impact and social responsibility that may affect their commercial objectives while pursuing investments or transactions. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Ethics | You discover that a senior lawyer has mistakenly included confidential information belonging to another client in a document that is about to be sent. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| What would you do? | My first priority would be to prevent any further disclosure of the document. I would inform the senior lawyer the error right away and avoid assessing any information beyond what was necessary to address the issue. I would seek guidance from the ethics team and assist the lawyer in error correcting | ||||||||||||||||||||
